The Story of Dragon Boat Festival

Introduction

Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is a time for eating zongzi (glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), watching dragon boat races, and remembering the life and death of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from ancient China.

The Legend of Qu Yuan

Qu Yuan was a minister in the state of Chu during the Warring States Period. He was known for his loyalty, wisdom, and patriotism. However, his outspokenness and opposition to the ruler’s policies led to his exile. During his exile, he wrote many poems that expressed his love for his country and his sorrow for its people.

When he learned that his homeland was invaded by the state of Qin, he became heartbroken and threw himself into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 278 BC. The people of Chu admired Qu Yuan for his integrity and devotion and threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to feed the fish and prevent them from eating his body. They also paddled their boats up and down the river to search for his body and pay their respects.

The Origins of Dragon Boat Racing

The tradition of dragon boat racing was born out of the people’s efforts to find Qu Yuan’s body. According to legend, they used their boats to create a disturbance in the water, thus keeping the fish away from Qu Yuan’s body. Later, dragon boat races became a popular event in China and abroad, and they are often held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month to commemorate Qu Yuan and celebrate the spirit of Chinese culture and sportsmanship.
